The backbone of
PASSAGE is a fiber optic network along county,
state, and Tollway roads which provides for data flow
between PASSAGE elements. Elements like:
real-time video, traffic signal controller data, Highway
Advisory Radio (HAR) messages, Computer Aided Dispatch
(CAD) data and web based information. The operators at
the Transportation Management Center (TMC) use the
network to manage all of the elements of PASSAGE.
Currently 85 miles long, originating from the
Transportation Management Center in Libertyville, this
fiber optic network connects approximately 150 traffic
signals in Lake County. Planned expansion over the next
few years will connect an additional 80 miles of fiber optic cable and over 200 signals to the
PASSAGE network.
