One goal of PASSAGE is to interconnect Lake
County’s traffic signals through a high speed communication network. The PASSAGE
network allows TMC operators to manage and adjust traffic signal timings
during a major traffic incident. Changing the timing of surrounding traffic
signals helps traffic to flow around the impacted area. Real time
connections also allow operators to detect malfunctioning signals and notify
service personnel. There are approximately 700 traffic signals in Lake
County, owned by IDOT, Lake County, Cook County, or one of 12 partner
municipalities. Approximately 250 of these signals are already part of the
PASSAGE network. Several construction projects are currently underway that
will add approximately 150 more signals to the PASSAGE system.
